UPROOT
BIPOC VISIONS OF OUR FOOD SYSTEM
Through collective envisioning of an equitable and just food system, UPROOT was a healing and interactive show shares the artwork, experiences, and stories of local BIPOC food leaders and community members. This curated experience centered a community art show, in addition to sound baths, local food, and art workshops.
Art as Method collaborated with the Durham Powerful Arts Collective (DurmPAC) to bring this experience to life. DurmPAC created a digital and print zine showcasing the entire UPROOT experience, including all of the artwork, the people, and our reflections.
COMMUNITY ART SHOW
We invited over 30 BIPOC artists of all ages to share pieces of art that explore the food system, food equity, and community perspectives on shaping fair and just food policies.
Works were displayed at Earthseed Land Collective and NorthStar Church of the Arts in Durham.
To cultivate a more equitable food system,
In the tapestry of our food system,
what seeds would you sow?
what threads would you sow to create a more equitable system?

WORKSHOP SERIES
DurmPAC and Art as Method invited artists, organizers and practitioners to host 7 workshops, gatherings, and experiences that connected us back to the land, our bodies, and to our creative spirit.
Echoes of the In-Between
Imane El Ghazouani & Tuesday Villane led participants through a sonic journey of liminal spaces and unseen realms, where sound acts as a bridge between the physical and metaphysical.
Slow Art Tour
Gail Belvett led participants through an inclusive process. Rather than quickly passing by several pieces, Belvett invites us to appreciate a single work of art, engaging multiple senses.
Landbody Movement
King Sage guided a somatic release ritual that guides participants through a series of movement and breathing exercises in collaboration with the Lands (Earth and water) of the Eno River and the whispers of Spirit. Landbody attempts to help workshop participants reground in nature using our senses and their inherent connection to the natural world around us.
Artist Panel & Closing Celebration
Bevelyn Ukah facilitated a conversation with exhibiting artists, featuring Ciara Anais Stewart , Antonia Brown, Rae Cozart, Priya Dames, Derrick Davis, Assata Goff, and Renzo Ortega.
